Hi I have recently purchased a very old book which was written by a very controversial vicar of his times by the name of Reverend Charles L Tweedale. He was the vicar of Weston Church from around 1901-1944 I think. On a recent visit to Otley I found the church at Weston which was very beautiful but not the grave of the Rev.CharlesTweedale, is it there? When did he die? I found his son's grave. Also are there any descendants still alive. I would love to find out more about this man and also where the vicarage is/was situated which was said to be haunted.

Hi, I came across your site while doing some family history research. I was searching for the Ling family as I recently discovered that my Great Great Great Grandmother was Maria LING who was born in Otley around 1835 and her father was Solomon LING and her mother was ?Helah. Anyway I didn't discover on Lings on your website but I must say it's a nice friendly site. best wishes,

Hello, the website is great! But i was surprised to see that there is no mention of the Otley White Hart Public House on this site. I visited Otley a couple of weeks ago on a lovely sunny day and finished it off with a drink and meal at the local. So i was surprised to see that there was not a mention of the public house on the village website. Hopefully the next time i visit the site there will be a mention as i thoroughly enjoyed my meal and drink and feel that others should share the delights of the pub as well. Apart from that its a great site!!
Thanks for signing the guest book Holly,
I agree it would be nice to have some information relating to the White Hart, however the current landlord has not been able to provide us with any information up to now, Obviously I'm not in a position to recommend anything on the site unless the information is accurate and being a tea-total myself my memories of the White Hart are some 35+ years old and amounted to a bottle of fizzy orange and a packet of OXO crisps
:)

My parents were both born in Otley in the early 1920's, lived their young lives there and were married in the early 1940's. I was born in 1952, also in Otley, but we moved to Blackpool when I was 4 years old. Both sets of grandparents were still living in Otley and we visited often. As a family we moved around from Blackpool to Bradford and then to South Africa in 1970.
My mother passed away last year, my father is still living. I was wondering if anyone remembers our family.
My father is Bruce Wilkinson, my late mother was Madge Wilkinson (nee Simpson). I am Maureen Hickman (nee Wilkinson) I also have a brother David.
PS Enjoy your website

This is what Peter discussing James Wade had to say:
My family comes from Otley and many are burid in the church yard including my great grandfather James Wade who lived in Gibralter Road in 1901. If any relative still lives in the village or knows of any family members I would be glad to hear from them. Thanks.
Hello Peter, Wade is not a name I remember hearing but then I'm never good with names, I'm sure someone out there may know something. I'll ask a few questions of some of the old regulars as I meet them and see if we can find something for you. Obviously your email address is hidden on this page for your security but I'll be happy to pass it to anyone that has some information for you.
Thanks for signing the guest book and Good Luck.

You can now get broadband in Otley. Although Helmingham exchange was broadband enabled in August most of Otley was excluded because it was too far from the exchange. However, the technical limits were relaxed on 6th September and my broadband was installed yesterday.
Thanks for that Tony,
Thats great news for Otley.

Hi everyone, I have been looking around your site (its very good) but I am trying to find out about renting a place in Otley or very near to it, I am interested in taking a job at Otley College and wanted to find out a bit more about your area! I have tried the Internet but not much seems to be coming up! Any ideas would be most welcome!!! Many Thanks, Natalie Everett
Natalie Hi, While we "Otleyweb" can not offer recommendations for anything listed here in our guestbook, I have just checked the village notice board and have seen the following two adverts:
(1) Unfurnished 2 bed Cottage for rent in Framsden, £450 per calendar month, phone eve's 01473 890868, day 07740 611539
(2) Room in family house available to professional person from September, town centre Woodbridge, Call Sally Jessup 07766 508055.
I would suggest trying some of the agents in the Ipswich, Woodbridge, Framlingham and Debenham areas. However, if I get any further information I will pass it on to you.

Lombe Fiske Hi Laurie, just read your little story and I may be able to add a little to the origin of the name. I'm researching some of the Fisk family myself and I seem to recall noticing that a number of the Fisk(e)s were married in the Laxfield area by a Rev Lombe (or it may have been his first name, and that at least one Fisk(e) child was then named after him. If I can find the info again I will let you know. Regards, Jim
Hi Jim, That sounds plausible, and yes I would be interested in that information.
I could also pass it on to Valerie, I'm sure she would be interested.

This is what Chuck and Jennie Magsig had to say:
We lived in Otley from 1970 to Oct.1973. My husband, Chuck, is American, and I am English. We rented Hall Farm House - down Hall Lane a little way past Otley Hall, on the right. Our landlord was named Tony but we can't remember his surname. When we left the house was sold and I believe the people who bought it still live there. We loved living in Otley and went to the Post Office Store quite a lot. We had a lovely cleaning lady and friend, named May, who lived almost opposite the Post Office. Our oldest son was born during our time there. He is now an Apache helicopter pilot in the US Army and has just returned from 7 months in Iraq. We enjoyed reading about Otley today. Thanks! Jennie
Hi Jennie, I think I remember the name "Magsig", we (dad & I used to have the garage filling station next door to the school, remember?). Was it Chuck that had the Red Corvette Stingray? I will ask the Holmes (owners of Hall Farm) and see if we can find out Tony's surname, I remember him and can almost picture him now! May Scrutton has now passed away but yes she was a sweet lady. While I remember the Corvette, dad was just saying that he remembers Chuck's "Globe cocktail cabinet"? And he thought it was Chuck that used to "Buzz" Otley when passing in his fighter jet? (Was that a sign that he would be home for tea by 18:00 I wonder?). Dad's long term memory is better than mine. If you get a minute pop him a mail you can find his link on the site "Poetry Of Ray Baker".
Its so nice to hear from you, best wishes to you all from us in Otley. Laurie. (Webmaster)

Hi Joseph, yes we introduced ourselves to Tony & Andrena just yesterday. I'm sure they will be very happy here in Otley.
It's nice to hear that they are helping to get the word out, and maybe we might even be able to persuade Tony or Andrena to put together a few words about why and how they came to pick Otley as their new home. Thanks again for signing our guestbook.

I found this site during a Sunday surfing session while waiting for bad weather to pass. I am working offshore in northern Brazil (yes they have bad weather there too) on the geophysical survey vessel "Ramform Viking" (Oil and gas exploration). The site has changed a lot since I first came across it (or maybe it was another) a while back and reflects a lot of effort put in by the webmaster I'm sure. Good work. I read your reply to John Mayer, a former Otley resident, and noted your mention of the mill. My wife and I moved to Otley in April 2000 and live in one of the "Hubbards Houses" as some locals call them, at the former mill site. I was once shown a very faded picture of the mill and a large tree in front of it near the road, a tree whose stump (all that remained when we moved in)my father-in-law and I sweated blood and tears to remove since it seemed to be home to all of the ant population of Suffolk. My wife and I once thought of having an artist work from a photo such as that one to produce a painting (or likeness I suppose) of the mill as it was. I wonder if any Otley (or elswhere) residents have such a picture available for loan, from which we could have an artist work?
Hello Angus, Nice to hear from you. Wow you are a long away from home! well at least I won't be waking you up at 6 am as I clip-clop past your door to lead the horse out in the morning?. My old school pal used to live in the big house that was also on that piece of land where your houses now are, seems such a long time ago now. I would expect that Christine Childs (Nee Davie) would have some pictures as her dad used to run the mill for Jim Hagg, I will ask next time I see her. It sounds like you have an interesting job on the Ramform Viking see Vessel Information maybe if you have a few minutes free you could write a little overview of what you do, I'm sure our readers would be interested, I could then add it to our section Regulars In the mean time keep safe, regards Laurie ..the Web Master.

Dear Sir or Madam, ladies and gentlemen: Possibly you'd like to purchase natural vegetable products manufactured by a modern Ukrainian company mainly of wheat shell (cellulose!) according to a new technology, which registered as a patent in number of countries. Or maybe you know other persons who are eager to cooperate in the field of distribution of this ecologically pure heath-improving food (cellulose; pineapple, banana and apple pectin in cellulose; awaken seeds of wheat, soya, maiz, peas; etc) on terms mutually beneficial for both parties. Could you possibly advise me their e-mails, or just direct this message to them. Thank you very much. Val Kinov iam@trade-india.com http://www.tradezone.com/tradesites/iam.html
Val, Thank you for taking the time to visit our site. While this is supposed to be the guestbook area of the site (for people to drop in and say hello), rather than a place for traders to advertise their products, I will leave your posting in-place. However, having visited your web page, I would like to remind our readers of this posting, that we "Otleyweb" in no way endorse any product listed on this area of the website, and the same must be said for the integrity of any links from the same.
I do however wish you all the best in your venture. Regards [The webmaster]

I lived in Otley from 39 until 53. Our house was next to the Church. The entrance to the Church ran through our garden. I wonder if this house is still intact. I remember also the Shurstons place .Is it still there? I now am a retired surgeon living on an island off the florida coast and would be grateful for any news.
Hi John, nice to hear from you. there is still a large house to the left of the church but there are now two modern houses (13yrs old) to the right along with a bungalow. I will try and get some pictures up for you to look at. I'm not sure about the Shurstons though? I guess you remember Doug Davey he use to work in the windmill? that's all gone now, it was here when I moved to Otley in 1968 but was soon replaced with a row of 5 houses and also a refrigeration factory. We otleweb, are next to the School at the old village garage, you would probably remember Skeets as the owners. Nice to hear from you and keep checking back. regards Laurie [webmaster].
